Wording Thank You Notes

Wording thank you notes can be very difficult.

It’s a big challenge to express what you feel in just a few words.

It's important to know how to write a thank you note properly.

Thank you notes are a proper way to express gratitude, encourage friendship and foster goodwill.

You can write it as a thank you note, a thank you letter or a thank you card.

Pick whatever works best for you. The key is to write and personalize your thank you.

Here are a few tips, including some sample thank you notes.

Keep it simple. Try to use no more than one adjective per sentence. In other words, say what you need to say without gushing. You don’t need to use every synonym of the word “good” to describe your friend.

Simple: Thank you for the gift you brought to my party on the 15th. I appreciate your thoughtfulness. (no adjectives)

Better: Thank you for the wonderful gift you brought to my party on the 15th. I appreciate your thoughtfulness. (one adjective)

Uh, Oh: Thank you for the charming and wonderful gift you brought to my party on the 15th. It’s so amazing and delightful. I appreciate your thoughtfulness and constant attentions. (Take out the middle sentence and maybe its okay.)

Keep it real. Don’t try thank you note wording as though the kind act was bigger than it was. If you overinflate what you write, it devalues the sentiment.

Simple: Thank you for your help at Robbie’s birthday party.

Better: Thank you for coming to Robbie’s birthday party and taking pictures for me. I really love the shots you took.

Uh, Oh: Thank you for coming to Robbie’s birthday party and taking pictures for me. I really love the shots you took. Those pictures mean everything to me.

Keep it personal. Don’t just say what you are thankful for, write why you are thankful for it.

Simple: Thank you for taking the time to help me at Robbie’s party.

Better: I know you have a busy schedule, and I appreciate the time you took to help me at Robbie’s party.

Simple: Thank you for the gift. It’s great. (Makes the reader think you don’t have a clue what the gift was. You’re just writing this thank you note because your mom is making you write it.)

Better: Thank you for the fire extinguisher. It's good to have one on hand. (A simple and better way to wording thank you notes.)

Keep it appropriate. Stay focused. If you’re writing about a gift, write about the gift. Don’t write superfluous information into your thank you card.

Simple: Thank you for the flowers.

Better: Thank you for the flowers. They brighten the room and make me smile each time I see them.

Uh, Oh: Thank you for the flowers. I’ve been so busy and things are hectic I’m going crazy right now. The flowers smell great. And they’re pretty. Life is crazy right now and it was nice of you to think of me.

Wording thank you notes can be challenging, but the only sure way to do it wrong, is to not write it at all.

Of course, everything I said about not overdoing the card does not apply if your thank you card is for something truly amazing: like your friend who threw a party for your child because you were too sick with chemo, and then documented it with video and scrapbooked pages.

Sometimes, you really can’t say enough good things about. And, those times, you need something more than just a simple card. Go ahead and write a letter and send a box of chocolates. But, the letter will mean more than the chocolates.

No matter how you write it, a thank you note will never mean anything unless you write it down and send it.
