Set Up

  1. Gather your materials: 1 posterboard, scissors, marker, tape, string, purple crepe paper or purple tissue paper, sheet of aluminum foil, star and moon (circle) stencil, plastic or Styrofoam plate, ribbon and white glue.

The Process for Making a Wizard Hat Pinata

  1. Use a posterboard to make a cone.
  2. Make the cone by trimming a posterboard into ¼ of a circle. Basically, draw a curve from one corner of the posterboard to the perpendicular side—both 22” away from the middle corner. Then overlap the sides and staple or tape to form a cone.
  3. Cut two small holes about 3 inches below the top of the hat and put some string through the holes to hang up the pinata.

Tips

  • Before covering with paper, trim the bottom edge of the cone to try to help it sit level. It’s difficult to trim it perfectly before forming it into a cone.
  • Use string or ribbon or even bias tape for the pinata hangar. Avoid using yarn or elastic. If using a thin string like kite string you will want to double each string.
  • Put masking tape on the posterboard where you will make the holes for the string. This will strengthen the posterboard and help keep the string from ripping through the posterboard as it is hanging.

How to Decorate the Wizard Hat Pinata

Wizard Hat Wrap Around

  1. Cover the cone with a large sheet of purple crepe paper or purple tissue paper by taping a corner of the paper at the top of the cone and roll it around until the cone is covered. Tape in place.
  2. Fold up the bottom ends of the purple paper and tape to the inside of the cone.
  3. On the dull side of the sheet of aluminum foil, use the stencils to trace several stars and moons—or circles cut in the shape of moons. Cut out the shapes.

  4. Use white glue to attach the stars and moons to the hat.
  5. Fill the hat with candy.
  6. Cover a plastic plate with more purple paper and tape the plate to the bottom of the pinata.

Tips

  • Be sure to keep the string for hanging the pinata out at the top of the hat.
  • If any spots were missed with the paper covering, cut another piece of purple paper and slide it under the larger piece. Glue or tape it in place.
  • Use only 4-6 pieces of tape to hold the plate to the hat. This is where the pinata will most likely break and if it is too secure, it won’t break.
  • Cover any exposed pieces of tape with foil stars or moons.

Pull and Yank Adjustments

  1. Insert these steps at step 6 above.
  2. Use a plastic plate instead of a Styrofoam plate and securely attach a ribbon to the plate that will be able to pull the pinata open. A piece of duct tape will hold the ribbon on the INSIDE of the plate and should pull it open.
  3. Fill the pinata and tape the plate to the hat with masking tape. Test it to be sure there’s enough tape to hold all the prizes in the pinata, but not so much tape that it won’t open before being pulled.
  4. Attach several more ribbons around the edge of the bottom of the pinata in coordinating colors of the pinata. Use small pieces of scotch or masking tape so the ribbons will easily pull away from the pinata.
  5. Cover the bottom of the pinata with a piece of tissue paper, held in place with white glue or scotch tape.

Tips

  • Use curling ribbon or craft ribbon that coordinate with the colors of the pinata.
  • The ribbon to open the trap door needs to be placed opposite the hinge so it can pull it open.
