Video Game Party Ideas

Throw a video game party that encourages activity, sportsmanship and promotes participation with these great video game ideas.

Live action video games for your video game birthday party.

Who wouldn't want to be Mario or Pacman or fight real Space Invaders at their video game birthday party?

Pinatas
Pacman (Turn a round pinata into a Pacman.)

Xbox (Make a present pinata black with a large green X. It’s not exact, but it will get the idea across.)

Invitations
Cut out graphics of your favorite video games and paste on an invitation. Then write: Calling all gamers: There’s a party going on! Then provide details for date, time and location of the party.

OR Use one of these printable video game invitations.

Cakes
Round cake decorated like Pacman.

Cover a rectangular cake with black frosting, then use square shaped gums or candies to design a Tetris board on it.

Decorations
Use black as your main color for decorating, with other bright colors to accent. Many of the older video games had a black screen with bright colors.

Joy stick candles – candle stuck into square cube decorated to look like a joy stick controller

Make a video screen on your wall. Put up some black butcher paper and decorate it with brightly colored cut outs of real or made up video game characters.

Make paths with gold coins for your guests to follow at your video game party.

Set out boxes wrapped with brown paper...try to make them look like the crate Mario is always knocking open to get prizes.

Costumes/Dress up
You can use a red baseball cap and put on a white felt circle with a large red “M” in the center for a Mario cap, or maybe a large black mustache.

Games and Activities
Space Invaders Bowling (ages 3-16)
Cover several empty cans or empty soft drink bottles with aliens from Space Invaders. Line up several rows of aliens and have your guests quickly bowl them down with tennis balls. Reset for each guest. A true classic video game party game.

Capture the Space Invader (ages 4-16)
Put three aliens on the back of each guest with a piece of masking tape. Instruct the guests to capture as many aliens as they can. The game is over when everyone has lost their aliens from their backs. The winner has the most aliens.

Pac Man Tag (ages 5-16)
Don’t get caught by the ghosts! Split the guests into two teams, Ghosts and Pac Mans. Start with more Pac Men than Ghosts. Put the ghosts in a central area and all the Pac Men on one side of the play area. Instruct the Pac Men to run to the other side of the room without being tagged by a ghost. Any Pac Men tagged by a Ghost become a ghost. Send the Pac Men through several times until there is only one left to win!

Mario Obstacle Course (ages 5-16)
Build an obstacle course, Mario style. Make a regular obstacle course with chairs to go around, a wading pool to go through, maybe a tunnel to crawl through. Then, include Mario-style challenges. Instead of giant turtles, toss in foam balls the guests are supposed to avoid. Jump over lava made from a red jacket. Break through brick walls made from empty boxes. Collect gold coins along the way. Then, the winner is the one to make it through without getting caught by the balls, and has the most coins. A perfect video game party activity.

Video Game Tournament
(ages 6-16)
Hold a video game tournament. Let everyone take turns playing the same game to see who can score the most points. Play individually or against each other. Try to make it a game that’s new for everyone so no one has the advantage of being more skilled with the game you choose.

Crafts

Tetris Designs (ages 4-16)
Use these printable Tetris style cubes, cut out, and make your own shapes and pictures with them.

Game Over Sign (ages 5-16)
Decorate a black sign with white letters that says “Game Over.” You can even make these on a door hanger with this template.

Perler Beads Magnets (ages 6-16)
Turn perler beads into your favorite video game characters. You will need perler beads, a form to work with, an iron, and sticky-backed magnets. Make the perler beads into whatever video game character suits your fancy, iron them to melt them, then add a magnet. This will be a memorable craft your guests will enjoy for quite some time after your video game party is over.

Refreshments
Turn your video game party into a video game feast!

Pac Man Cupcakes
Decorate the top of the cupcakes to look like Pac Man or some of the ghosts.

Mario Italian Sandwiches
Turn a loaf of French bread into an Italian sub sandwich. Use your choice of salami, pepperoni, pastrami and roast beef. Add lettuce, tomatoes, sweet green peppers, banana peppers (pepperoncini) and oil and vinegar. Then slice into pieces 1-2 inches wide.

Mario Meatballs
Cook meatballs in some barbecue or an Asian sauce or condensed cream of mushroom soup and serve as an appetizer.

Tetris Sandwiches
Cut sandwiches into Tetris shapes. You can even color them by brushing them lightly with colored milk.

Gaming Snacks
Serve finger foods and bite sized snacks like ‘Lil Smokies, nachos, popcorn, cracker mixes, or fruit and vegetable trays.

Take Home Gift Ideas
Batteries
Any small toy that looks like a video game controller or character
