Service Party Ideas

Throw a service party to help your community. You can do it for a birthday party, a Christmas party, a wedding anniversary, or any time at all.

Sometimes you want to give back to the community. Great!

You can do this by throwing a regular themed party and on the invitation asking the guests to bring a donation for your favored charitable organization in lieu of a gift.

Or, you can host the service activity for your party.

It’s a good idea to decorate for the party, but it is not necessary. Do provide refreshment. Always provide good food for your guests with any humanitarian project.

Always warn your guests you will be hosting a service project. Serving should be exciting and fun. Children might become upset if they are expecting a party with games but are put to work instead.

Our family’s favorite service activity with young children is to stuff bags.

Sometimes we put together craft kits for the local children’s hospital. We set out everything needed to make a simple craft in piles. Then we put everything in individual ziplock bags. We make 10-50 kits at a time for each particular craft.

Sometimes we put together humanitarian aid kits for the LDS church to distribute. They send hygiene kits, newborn kits and school kits to children and families around the world.

Here are some service project ideas you can do at a Service Party:

  • Put together craft kits for a children’s hospital
  • Collect stuffed animals or make lap quilts for police cars or ambulances
  • Make cards to send to a nursing home
  • Make bird houses or bird feeders for a respite care center or convalescence care center
  • Shovel snow, rake leaves, weed a garden, or take out the garbage can and bring it back for someone unable
  • Donate used clothes, toys in good condition to a women’s crisis center or family support center—call first to find out what they are most in need of, it may be toiletries
  • Send letters/cards to local military
  • Hold a neighborhood food or clothing drive
  • Collect school supplies for poor students.
  • Hold a car wash to raise money for a cause you care about.
  • Have a scavenger hunt to collect food for the needy.

Organizations to check to possibly help with your Service Party:

  • Local church
  • LDS Church for world humanitarian aid
  • Local wildlife refuge
  • United Way
  • Rest home or rehabilitation center
  • Women's or Family Crisis Center
  • Thrift store—most are charity based organizations
  • Neighborhood watch programs
  • Food bank
  • Ronald McDonald House
  • Soup Kitchen
  • Homeless Shelter
  • Animal Shelter
  • Library
  • Museums, zoos and aquariums
  • Senior Citizen Services
  • Family Support Social Service Programs
  • City Volunteer Center

Helpful hints for organizing your Service Party:

  • If you’re working someplace public, wear coordinated clothing—a bunch of red shirts stand out.
  • If you need supplies, on the invitation ask the guests to bring supplies in lieu of gifts.
  • If putting together kits for children under three-make sure the items are too large to be choking hazards.
