Up
- Gather your materials: 2 pieces of white
posterboard,
scissors, white
glue, masking tape, duct tape, stapler, hole punch,
ribbon and red, orange,
yellow, green, blue, purple and light blue tissue paper.
- Mark two lines down the center of the
posterboard, five inches apart. This will be the bottom of the
pinata.
- Put a
large bowl in the corner of the posterboard and draw a line around it.
Do the same for the other corner. This will give you the curved corners
for the rainbow. Connect the curves with straight lines and cut the
corners. Do the same for the other end of the
posterboard.

- Fold the posterboard on the lines drawn
down the middle.
- Cut two strips, 6 inches wide, from the
other posterboard. Trim and curve the corners of the strips.
- Cut the tissue paper for the rainbow (all
but the light blue) into
long strips. I cut each piece of tissue paper into two strips.
Tips
- Use lightweight posterboard.
The
Process
- Staple the strips of posterboard to the
bottom and along the edges
of the rainbow. Put in a staple every inch or so. There will be small
gaps, it's okay. (Sorry, the picture is from the taco pinata, but you
get the idea.)

- When
it becomes difficult to bend the center posterboard to the rainbow,
snip the center posterboard to help it bend. Place a 1 inch snip
between staples to help the posterboard bend and fit
the
curve of the rainbow.
-
Staple
the posterboard toward the center of the rainbow pinata, but leave a 6
or 8 inch opening at the top. (Again, sorry for the picture of the taco
pinata, but it's still the same process.)

4. Put a strip of duct tape inside the
rainbow
at the top. Punch two holes on each
side (a
total of four holes), about 4 inches
apart from
each other.
5. Run the ribbon for hanging
the pinata
through the punched holes, forming a criss
cross. It's
actually very similar to lacing tennis shoes.
6. Scrunch the strips of red tissue
paper. Put some white glue along the outer edge
of the pinata and
lay the red tissue paper along the outer edge of the rainbow.

7. Follow the same process with the
orange, yellow, green and blue strips of tissue
paper.
8. Before applying the purple tissue
paper, glue a singe or double thickness of light
blue tissue paper
flat against the center of the pinata. Then glue the purple strip of
tissue paper in its place. It
will cover the
edges of the light blue tissue paper so
that it looks nice. I guess you could
cover the
entire side of the rainbow with light
blue before putting in the
stripes of rainbow colors. But that just seems like a bit
too much work to me.
9. Use white glue to cover the bottom
and sides of the pinata with light blue tissue
paper. Don't
crinkle it. Just lay it on smooth.
10. After the glue has dried, fill your
rainbow pinata and hang it up.
Tips
- You can let the ends of the rainbow colors
dangle over the bottom
edge of the pinata. It gives it a nice look. Do not do the same for the
light blue tissue paper. It's just there to cover the posterboard and
help the rainbow shine.
- Use string or ribbon or even bias tape
for the
pinata
hangar. Avoid using yarn or elastic. If using a thin string like kite
string
you will want to double each string.

Adjustments
- Insert these steps before step #1 above.
- Cut 2 snips, 4 inches long and 3
inches apart, in the bottom of the rainbow. Then place a small
piece of masking tape over each snip.
- Put a piece of tape near the edge of the
pinata, between the two snips and punch a hole through it. Tie
a ribbon in the hole.
- Decorate the rainbow as directed above.
- After decorating the rainbow, attach several
more ribbons to the bottom of the rainbow. Use small pieces of scotch
or masking tape so the ribbons will easily pull away from the
pinata.

- Now cover the sides and bottom of the pinata
with light blue
tissue paper. Be careful to let the ribbons dangle from the rainbow
pinata.
Tips
- Use curling ribbon or craft ribbon that
coordinate with the
colors of the pinata.
- I
placed two ribbons on each side of the rainbow pinata that could open
it
up. I just wanted to be certain the pinata would open and release its
treasure.
Now your Rainbow Pinata
is ready for your party.
