The Process of  Making a Princess Hat Pinata

  1. Use a posterboard to make a cone.
  2. Make the cone by trimming a posterboard into ¼ of a circle. Basically, draw a curve from one corner of the posterboard to the perpendicular side—both 22” away from the middle corner. Then overlap the sides and staple or tape to form a cone.
  3. Cut two small holes about 3 inches below the top of the hat and put some string through the holes to hang up the pinata.

Tips

  • Before covering with paper, trim the bottom edge of the cone to try to help it sit level. It’s difficult to trim it perfectly before forming it into a cone.
  • Put masking tape on the posterboard where you will make the holes for the string. This will strengthen the posterboard and help keep the string from ripping through the posterboard as it is hanging.
  • Use string or ribbon or even bias tape for the pinata hangar. Avoid using yarn or elastic. If using a thin string like kite string you will want to double each string.

How to Decorate the Princess Hat Pinata

Princess Hat Wrap

  1. Cover the cone with a large sheet of pink crepe paper or pink tissue paper by taping a corner of the paper at the top of the cone and roll it around until the cone is covered. Tape in place.
  2. Fold up the bottom ends of the pink paper and tape to the inside of the cone.
  1. Cut two strands of purple crepe paper streamers about 5 yards long and fold in half the long way, so they’re only about 1” wide.
  2. Attach the crepe paper to the top of the hat and wrap each around the hat. First wrap one around in a clockwise direction and wrap the second in a counterclockwise direction.
  3. With white glue to attach sequins on each cross of the purple streamers.
  4. Use hot glue to attach pink and purple streamers to the top of the hat and glue a pink bow tied from a piece of streamers at the top.
  5. Fill the hat with candy.
  6. Cover the plastic plate with more pink paper and tape the plate to the bottom of the pinata.

  7. Hot glue a pink or purple bow made form crepe paper streamers over each piece of tape at the bottom of the hat. And, now you have an enchanting princess hat pinata.

Tips

  • Be sure to keep the string for hanging the pinata out at the top of the hat.
  • If any spots were missed covering the hat with paper, cut another piece of pink paper and slide it under the larger piece. Glue or tape it in place.
  • Use a dab of white glue at the front and back of each rotation of the purple streamers around the hat. Then use another dab of white glue at each cross the second streamer makes when being wrapped around the hat. This holds the streamers in place so they won’t shift later.
  • Use only 4-6 pieces of tape to hold the plate to the hat. This is where the pinata will most likely break and if it is too secure, it won’t break.

Pull and Yank Adjustments

  1. Insert these steps at step 8 above.
  2. Use a plastic plate instead of a Styrofoam plate and securely attach a ribbon to the plate that will be able to pull the pinata open. A piece of duct tape will hold the ribbon on the INSIDE of the plate and should pull it open.
  3. Fill the pinata and tape the plate to the hat with masking tape. Test it to be sure there’s enough tape to hold all the prizes in the pinata, but not so much tape that it won’t open before being pulled.
  1. Attach several more ribbons around the edge of the bottom of the pinata in coordinating colors of the pinata. Use small pieces of scotch or masking tape so the ribbons will easily pull away from the pinata.
  2. Cover the bottom of the pinata with a piece of tissue paper, held in place with white glue or scotch tape.

Tips

  • Use curling ribbon or craft ribbon that coordinate with the colors of the pinata.
  • The ribbon to open the trap door needs to be placed opposite the hinge so it can pull it open.
  • If the ribbon attached to the trap door is not at the edge of the pinata, use small bits of scotch tape to hold it to the edge of the pinata. The false bottom will cover it up.
