Play the
Pinata Game
Fun to make
and fun to break!
Play
the pinata game. Play it safe. Play it fun. Play it together.
How
to Hang a Pinata
- Loop a rope through the string at the top of
the pinata and
tie a knot. Loop the rope over a hook or rafter beam or secure it to
the end of
a long sturdy stick—like a broom handle.
- The pinata can be raised and lowered by pulling
on the rope
or raising the stick higher.
Tips
- If you’re holding the pinata at the end of a
stick, like a
broom handle, be sure the stick used to hit the pinata is shorter so
the person
holding up the pinata is not likely to be hit.
How
to Safely Play
the Pinata Game
- Clear the play area. Young guests will move and
trip over
anything lying around, so get it out of the way.
- Establish the rules before beginning the game.
You may want
to give each guest a small sack to collect their loot at this time as
well.
Traditional Whack and
Bash Method
- Bring a guest to the pinata and have the other
guests a
safe distance away from the pinata.
- Decide how many times each person will get to
hit the pinata, maybe 3 or 8 times, whatever is appropriate for your
group.
- Blindfold the first guest and let them touch
the pinata with
their stick then spin them around three times and let them go at it.
Raise or
lower the pinata as desired.
- Let each guest have a turn until it is broken
open.
- Dive in and claim your prize!
Tips
- A good way to demonstrate a safe distance is to
slowly,
carefully, swing around with the whacking stick pointed outward. Anyone
touching the stick could be hit while the guest is swinging at the
pinata. This
process may need to be repeated with each whacker if the guests crowd
in
toward the pinata.
Pull and Yank Method
- Allow each guest a turn at pulling a
ribbon. All the
ribbons should easily pull off the pinata except one, which will open
the
trap door.
- Dive in and claim your prize!
Tips
- Attach a small toy to each ribbon to ease any
disappointment
in not being the one to open the pinata.
- Sometimes it is fun to allow all the guests to
hold a ribbon and pull at the same time.
