Decorations
(By the light of the rockets red glare)
Colors should be red, white and blue, of course.
Turn paper
towel tubes into rockets by making a cone shaped head at one end and
streamers trailing
behind—hang from the ceiling. Put up lots of stars. Make a red and
white
bunting from crepe paper.
Use
this free patriotic banner to hang up for your party.
Cakes
(Star spackled delicacies)
Vanilla cake with whipped cream frosting topped with a
square of blueberries in the top left corner and sliced strawberries in
stripes
alternating with the white background of the frosting—so it looks like
a flag.
USA
Flag Cupcake Cake A cake made from cupcakes and decorated to
look like a flag. They're simple and everyone loves a cupcake.
Costumes/Dress
up (Fashion for your patriotic party)
Three
Corner
Hat
These are made by using three strips of colored paper or
foam sheets (red, white and blue, of course) that are stapled end to
end.
Games
and Activities (And the pursuit of
exuberance)
Pin
the Hat
(ages 3-10)
Put a picture of Uncle Sam (with no hat) on a poster board.
Make several hats. Take turns blindfolding the guests and have them pin
(or
tape) a hat on Uncle Sam.
Patriotic Color It (ages 3-16)
Divide into teams and provide each guest with an oversized
shirt to protect their clothes. Instruct each team to color a
posterboard with
red and blue jell-o and canned whipped cream. Best picture wins!
Old
Faithful Diet Coke Geyser
(ages 3-16)
Drop 2-4 peppermint flavored Mentos into a 2 liter Diet Coke.
Then stand back and watch it blow. I recommend standing back quickly.
You will want to have the Mentos in your hand, ready to slip into the
beverage. If some of the Mentos slip out and don't make it in, don't
try to save them-you'll get sprayed because of the ones that did make
it in. You may want to have a few containers of Diet Coke.
Obstacle
Course (ages 3-16)
Make an obstacle course through the back yard with a sprinkler
going. Go over a wheel barrow, under lounge chairs, around a tree,
through a
shallow swimming pool and ride a tricycle a short distance. You can
also string
a rope along the path of the obstacle course and send the guests
through it
blindfolded. Some guests may imagine this as soldier training at your
patriotic party.
Yankee
Doodle Mad Lib (ages 3-16)
Try a new spin on an old favorite at your patriotic party. Have a
printout of Yankee Doodle Went to London with
several words left blank. Ask for
alternates for the blank words—stuck some ice cream in his hat and
called
chicken soup. Read the new version aloud. Star Spangled Lexicon (ages 8-16) How many words can you make from the letters in “AMERICA”
or “UNCLE SAM?” Click
for this PDF file here.
|
National Park Match (ages 8-16)
Match the state with the national park, or national monument, or national historical park, or
national seashore, or national parkway, or national historic site, or
national
recreation area. Click
for this PDF file here.
Crafts
(Creations for your patriotic party)
Drum
(ages
3-8)
Provide each guest with a clean, empty tin can (coffee can
or other). Turn the cans upside down so the open end is down. Cover the
cans
with red, white or blue paper and decorate with markers, glitter and
cut out
stars. Provide two dowels for each guest so they can beat their drum.
(You may
use margarine or whipped cream tubs instead of cans.)
Top Hat (ages 3-10)
Make a top hat from foam sheets—use black foam sheets to
honor President Lincoln, or red, white and blue sheets for more
patriotic fun.
Provide each guest with a cutout hat rim (a large circle with a smaller
circle,
the size of a child’s head, cut out of the center) and two pieces of
identical
color. Decorate the foam pieces as desired then tape the foam sheets
together
horizontally (the short sides together) to form a cylinder. Cut 2 inch
flaps at
the bottom of the large foam sheets and glue the flaps to the underside
of the
hat rim.Star Cookies (ages 3-12)
Put out 2-3 star shaped cookies on a paper plate for each
guest. Provide red, white and blue frosting (from a can or mix up your
own).
Put the frosting in baggies with a tip cut off or in bowls with plastic
knives
for spreading the frosting. Have bowls of candy sprinkles, colored
sugar and
small candies on the table and allow everyone to decorate their
cookies. Some
will want to eat them right away, and some will want to save them.
Write the
guest's names on their plates.
Patriotic Pinwheels (ages 3-12)
Use
this file to create your pinwheels. Cut on the dotted lines.
Decorate both
sides of the square. Gently fold the
outer corner
of each triangle toward the center of the square and use a push pin to
push
through the four corners and the center of the pinwheel to
attach the pinwheel to
the
side of a pencil eraser. And then blow away the blues from your
patriotic party. |

Popsicle Stick Flags (ages 5-12)
Give each guest 9 craft sticks. Color five with a red marker
and leave the other 4 plain. To
make the
flag, lay the craft sticks in an alternating pattern with the colored
side
faced down. Glue a craft stick to the left edge, flush with the top and
extending below the flag. Glue two more shortened craft sticks (use
strong
scissors to cut an inch off the craft sticks) to the middle and other
side of
the flag. Allow to dry. Write guest’s name with pen on the back side of
the
flag. When glue is dry, turn over and glue a small square of blue
construction paper
in the top left corner of the flag and decorate with silver or white
star
stickers. Another craft stick may be glued or taped to the handle as an
extension.
Firecrackers (ages 5-16)
These
are noiseless mimcs of the real thing so your patriotic party won't be
blasted away. Decorate toilet paper tubes to look like firecrackers.
Provide each guest with a toilet paper tube. Cut out two 2 ½” circles
from
tissue paper and wrap each around an end of the tube. Glue or tape in
place.
Then wrap the tube with red, white or blue paper and decorate with
glitter glue
and patriotic stickers. Poke a 2” piece of silver pipe cleaner through
the top
of the tube for a wick. It will be easier to use wrapping paper rather
than construction paper.
