Decorations
Classic colors like black and silver work well for a New Year’s Party.

Put up lots of clocks, all set for midnight, of course.

Write the new year (2010) on poster board and fill in the numbers with mini balloons. Tape the balloons in place.

Make a centerpiece with party blowers

Hang up stars. You can cut these from colored paper or use aluminum foil. If using aluminum foil you may want to glue the foil to cardstock first, and then cut out, so it will hang with a bit of weight.

Hang curling ribbons from the ceiling, light fixtures, window fixtures, etc.

Baby bottles and pacifiers for the New Year

Games and Activities
Find the Time (ages 3-10)
Hide a ticking clock in a room and then have the guests search for it. The guest who finds it gets to hide it next. Continue play for several rounds.

Leap into the New Year (ages 3-16)
Allow each guest to leap into the new year, in their own style. Leap from a chair onto a bean bag, small trampoline or drag out a mattress to leap on. Have fun.

Party Blowers (ages 3-16)
Give each guest a party blower with the instructions to blow it in anyone’s face anytime they’re caught yawning.

Make a Toast (ages 3-16)
Toast the new year and the old year at your New Years party. Give each guest a beverage, virgin drink or root beer float, and have fun taking turns giving toasts for the new year.

Racket at Midnight (ages 3-16)
To celebrate the new year, do something all together at midnight: sit on balloons to make them pop, blow bubbles, break the piñata, jump on bubble wrap, etc.

Capture Time (ages 4-16)
Print out several small clocks, and cut out. Tape three clocks on the back of each guest with a piece of masking tape. Instruct the guests to collect as many clocks as they can. The game is over when everyone has lost all sense of time, I mean, when everyone has lost their clocks. The winner has the most time, or clocks. This is maybe the only way to capture time at your New Years party.

It’s a New You (ages 5-16)
This New Years party game is most suitable for girls. Bring out make-up and hair styling supplies and have fun! Experiment and try new styles. You may want to check out some books from the library (or websites) with hair style ideas and make-up ideas.

Crumpled Paper Toss (ages 7-16)
Give each guest 3 pieces of paper and have them, first, write old habits they want to get rid of in the new year on the papers and then crumple them. Instruct the guests to sit or stand in a circle around a paper bag or box and on the count of three, all of them begin throwing their paper balls into the bag or box. Give them just 5 or 8 seconds to throw their away their old habits. Any that miss the bag or box should be given another try.

Crafts
It’s Time (ages 3-7)
Print out a clock and have the guests paste pictures from magazines or newspapers of things they do at the time on the clock. Maybe by 7:00 put a bed, by 8:00 put a bowl of cereal, by 9:00 a school bus, etc.

Where Did the Time Go? (ages 3-7)
Print out a clock and numbers and have the guests make their own clocks. They can put the numbers on backwards or mixed up if they want. Provide markers, glitter, etc. for decorating. Use a brad to put the hands in the center of the clock.

Paper Plate Noisemakers (ages 3-8)
Fold a paper plate in half. Put about ¼ cup of beans inside and staple around the edges. Then decorate with markers and stickers. Rattle around to make noise. The nice thing is, they’re not extremely noisy.

Make Party Hats (ages 3-16)
It's not a proper New Years party without party hats. Provide the following materials: paper plates, cardstock, scissors, curling ribbon, tape, tissue paper, glue, glitter, stickers, markers, pipe cleaners, etc. Ask the guests to make and design their own hats. You may be surprised at some of the designs.

Make a New Goal Collage (ages 5-16)
Give each guest a mat for a picture. Then cut out pictures or words from old magazines and advertisements. Glue the cut outs to the picture mat. To describe what you want to do and be in the coming year. Put each guest’s picture in their new picture mat. This is also a momento your guests can take home from your New Years party.

Make a Clock (ages 7-16)
Provide each guest with the supplies to make their own clock or watch. You can pick this up from most craft stores.

Make a Time Capsule (ages 6-16)
In the invitation for your New Years party tell the guests you will be making a time capsule. Ask them to bring something to put in the capsule (be sure to give them the dimensions of the capsule, almost any container will work). Have each guest fill out a sheet of questions about themselves. Put the information sheet, a penny with the current year stamped on it, and any other appropriate items in the capsule. Seal and mark it to be opened in 10 years.
