Make a Heart Pinata

How to make a Heart Pinata

Set Up

  1. Gather your materials: 2 pieces of white posterboard, scissors, white glue, masking tape, stapler, hole punch, string or ribbon, and red and pink tissue paper.

  1. Trace two hearts on a posterboard. To make both of the hearts fit on one piece of posterboard make the hearts 16.5 inches wide and 15.5 inches long. Make a fold 8.25 inches in from the side for each heart. Cut out one heart and use it as a template for the second heart so they will have the same shape.

  2. Cut two 6 inch wide strips from the other posterboard.
  3. Cut the red and pink tissue paper into fringes. Fold and cut the tissue paper in strips about 2 inches wide, when folded. Then snip fringes about ¼ or ½ inch wide from the open side, up toward the folded edge of the strip of tissue paper.

Tips

  • Use lightweight posterboard.
  • If the the second heart you cut out has a chunk missing, just tape a scrap piece of posterboard to it and cut out to the appropriate shape. It'll be covered with tissue paper so no one will know.
  • To make the fringe, fold several pieces of tissue paper together, then cut into 2 inch strips. Separate the strips and stack on top of each other, with the folded edges aligned. Then cut the fringe for several layers at the same time.

The Process

  1. Lay a strip of posterboard across the heart, matching the bottom corner and bottom line of the heart. Staple the sides together until the side of the heart begins to turn, about 1-1 ½ inches between staples.
  2. Staple the other strip along the other side of the heart in a similar manner.
  3. Staple the two strips together at the bottom.

  4. Add the other side of the heart.
  5. Continue stapling the strips along the heart. When it
becomes difficult to bend the center posterboard to the
heart, snip the strip of posterboard to help it bend. A
1 inch snip between staples will help the posterboard
      bend.
   6. Staple the posterboard strips toward the center of the
heart, but leave a 6 or 8 inch opening at the top.
   7. Put a strip of duct tape inside the heart at the top. Punch
two holes on each side (a total of four holes), about 4
      inches apart from each other.
   8. Run the ribbon for hanging the pinata through the
punched holes, forming a criss cross. It's actually very
      similar to lacing tennis shoes.
    9. Apply pink fringe to the sides of the heart. Put some
white glue on the bottom of one of the sides of the heart
pinata and apply the pink fringe. Begin at the bottom. Put
a new layer of fringe 1 inch above the bottom layer.

10. Then use white glue to attach strips of red and pink fringe
on the heart. Apply to both sides.

11. After the glue has dried, fill your heart pinata and hang it
      up.

Tips

  • Use string or ribbon or even bias tape for the pinata hangar. Avoid using yarn or elastic. If using a thin string like kite string you will want to double each string.

Pull and Yank Adjustments

  1. Insert these steps before step #4 above.
  2. Put a few pieces of masking or duct tape along the edges of the strips of posterboard, near the top of the hearts and punch a few holes through them. Tie a ribbon in each hole.
  3. Attach several more ribbons to the backside of the heart, that will hang out the sides. Use small pieces of scotch or masking tape so the ribbons will easily pull away from the pinata.
  4. Now staple the heart into the pinata and carefully staple, with the ribbons between the staples.

Tips

  • Use curling ribbon or craft ribbon that coordinate with the colors of the pinata.
  • I placed two ribbons on each side of the heart pinata that could open it up. Then I had each guest grab a ribbon and pull all at the same time. This provided multiple tears in the heart to open it up quite well.

Now your Heart Pinata is ready for your party.
