Hamburger Bar Ideas

Serve your guests a traditional barbecue with a hamburger bar.

Serve a few simple sides like pork and beans, potato salad or macaroni salad. Check out this link for more salad recipes

You can grill up the hamburger and hot dogs and serve them to your guests as they finish cooking. Or cook them ahead of time and keep them in a warm oven in a tin pan covered with foil. It’s not as exciting as a live barbecue, but it’s still tasty and something that can be prepared ahead of time.

There's a scene at the end of the movie "How to Marry a Millionaire" which I absolutely love. The three main women of the movie, played by Lauren Bacall, Marilyn Monroe and Betty Grable are married, but not to millionaires. They're at a cafe, eating hamburgers (Bacall's character calls them horse burgers and puts coleslaw on her burger) when Bacall's husband pulls out a large wad of cash and she learns her husband really is a millionaire. All the women faint at the sight of that much money. I find it hilarious on many levels.

But, you ought to try the coleslaw on your hamburger. I never considered it until I saw that movie, and it is rather tasty.

Below are other ideas for hamburger recipes and hamburger toppings.

Sloppy Joe Filling

1 lb. hamburger meat
½ onion, diced
1 can tomato sauce

1 Tablespoon brown sugar
1 teaspoon vinegar
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning

Saute meat and onion until done. Drain any excess fat. Add tomato sauce, brown sugar and seasoning. Heat until warm, stirring occasionally. May be put in a crockpot to keep warm until serving.

This recipe freezes well. Make it a week ahead and save in a freezer container. Thaw in the refridgerator a day or two before the party and warm up just before serving.

Mushroom & Onion Saute

8 oz. mushrooms, sliced
½ onion, ringed

1 clove garlic, finely minced
1 Tablespoon oil

Heat oil in skillet. Add remaining ingredients. Cook on medium high heat until onions are carmelized (lightly brown). Serve warm.
