Make a Crown Pinata

How to make a Crown Pinata

crown pinata

I made this crown pinata for my daughter's birthday party, just a couple weeks after we moved to a new home. I couldn't find my camera anywhere.
The only picture I have is one my Mom took. Thanks Mom!

Set Up

  1. Gather your materials: 2 pieces of cardboard from a packing box or a round cake board, scissors, white posterboard, white glue, masking tape, clear packing tape, foam paint brush, hole punch, curling ribbon and yellow and orange tissue paper.
  2. Use a large bowl as your template and cut out two circles form the cardboard. One for the top of your crown and one for the bottom.

  1. Print out this template to make the crown. Cut two strips from the posterboard. Each strip should be 4-6 inches wide, with the template added at the top of one of the strips.

Tips

  • Use lightweight posterboard.

The Process

  1. Decorate the crown with tissue paper. Thin some white glue with 1 part water to 1 part glue. Use the foam paint brush to apply some glue mixture to the posterboard that will become the crown. Add a few pieces of cut tissue paper, mostly yellow with a few orange. Put more glue mixture on top of the tissue paper if needed. Continue until the entire crown is covered. (Taco pinata picture below. Same technique for the crown pinata, just don't use purple tissue paper.)

  2. Decorate with glitter. You can use white glue and glitter or glitter glue. Make three gold stripes at the bottom and two at the top. Then use some colors to make gems in each circle at the top of the crown. Set aside and allow to dry.
  3. Use clear packing tape to attach the plain back strip of posterboard crown to the bottom circle. Wrap the bottom of the strip of posterboard around the cardboard circle  and hold in place with a few pieces of tape
  4. Tape front piece of the crown to bottom circle, overlapping the sides of the crown with the sides of the posterboard around the back.
  1. Tape the front and back pieces of the crown to each other.
  2. Punch holes in sides of crown. Add tape to reinforce the holes. String with curling ribbon to hang the pinata.
  3. Fill the pinata.
  4. Set in top circle of cardboard.

Tips

  • I didn't bother to decorate the strip of posterboard that makes the back of the crown. But you can.
  • Use string or ribbon or even bias tape for the pinata hangar. Avoid using yarn or elastic. If using a thin string like kite string you will want to double each string.
Pull and Yank Adjustments
  1. Insert these steps before step #3 above.
  2. Cut two times into the cardboard for the bottom of the pinata, about two inches apart and no more than two inches long, each.
  3. Poke a hole between the cuts and tie a piece of curling ribbon throught the hole. I actually did this in three places around the cardboard.
  4. Attach several more ribbons to the inside, bottom of the pinata.
Use small pieces of scotch or masking tape so the ribbons will easily pull away from the pinata. Be sure the ribbons will be dangling out of the crown.

    Tips

    • Use curling ribbon or craft ribbon that coordinate with the colors of the pinata.

Now your Crown Pinata is ready for your party.
