Cricut Cake Decorating

Cricut cake decorating tips for professional looking cakes with minimum work.

Cake Tips:

Duncan Hines cake mixes are the best. Follow the instructions, especially mixing the appropriate amount of time. It makes a difference.

Allow the cake to cool about 5 minutes before removing from the pan.

Then allow to cool completely before decorating.

After cake is cooled set it upright (as it had been in the pan) and use a long knife to slice the top of the cake off so it will lay flat instead of domed.

Then turn the cake back over.

Awesome, isn't it!?
You can freeze the cake so there won't be any crumbs when you spread frosting. But, if you're using fondant that's not going to be a problem anyway.

Cricut Cake Decorating Tips:

Follow the guide that came with your Provo Craft Cricut Cake machine to learn how to use it correctly.

Use a special fondant roller or a marble rolling pin with gum paste and fondant. They work better than the wooden rolling pins.

Roll out the gum paste or fondant just a little before rolling it on the greased mat. Otherwise all the shortening gets spread from the center to the outer edges of the mat and it might be more difficult to extract a delicately cut piece.

While preparing the gum paste or fondant on the mat for the Provo Craft Cricut Cake machine it's better to trim the gum paste or fondant just a little inside the line on the edges. You don't really want the fondant and gum paste to get stuck in the rollers. It could pull at the paste and fondant on the sheet and give you a funny shape.

Using Fondant in Cricut Cake Decorating:

Fondant tastes better than gum paste. And it's softer. Kids will really appreciate fondant on a cake more than gum paste when it comes time to eat the cake.

But fondant won't make as many intricate designs as the gum paste. Choose simple and larger shapes when working with fondant.

Fondant can be kept in a ziploc bag in the fridge for a couple weeks. But bring to room temperature before rolling and cutting. Don't use the microwave for more than 30 seconds to soften the fondant. It's better to leave it out for a few hours to make it the right temperature.

Before rolling fondant on the mat you may want to add some coloring. Use gel food coloring and knead it in.

Use a pizza cutter to trim the edges of the fondant when on the mat.

Grease the mat before rolling out the fondant. Roll it thin, but not so thin you can see the mat through the fondant. Trim the edges then freeze the rolled fondant for several minutes...maybe 5.

Cut the frozen fondant in the Provo Craft Cricut Cake machine. Have the machine programmed before getting the fondant from the freezer. It thaws quickly.

If pulling away the extra pieces of fondant pulls at the cut shapes, stick the fondant back in the freezer for a few minutes before pulling the excess off.

And, if needed, you may want to stick that fondant back in the freezer, again, before removing the shapes so they won't get misshapen as you move them from the mat to the cake.

Use frosting to glue fondant pieces on top of fondant.

Fondant is a little trickier in Cricut cake decorating, but it can still make a beautiful cake.

Using Gum Paste in Cricut Cake Decorating:

Gum paste is a little stiffer than fondant. You can roll it thinner and make more delicate cut shapes with it. But, it's not as tasty. And, when it dries, you really don't want to eat it.

But it makes such pretty cakes!

Bring gum paste to room temperature or soften in the microwave for no more then 30 seconds. The best way to soften gum paste for all your  Cricut cake decorating is to knead it.

Before rolling on the mat you may want to add some coloring. Use gel food coloring and knead it in.

When rolling out the gum paste on the Provo Craft Cricut Cake mat you can make it so thin you'll be able to see the lines on the mat through the gum paste.

Keep the gum paste covered. It dries out very quickly.

Cover and cover and cover. You can use a sheet of plastic wrap to cover it.

Or, if you have gum paste already rolled out on a mat, but someone rings the doorbell, place the other (already greased) mat over the top of it very lightly.

If the gum paste is too dry when the Provo Craft Cricut Cake machine cuts it you'll end up with jagged edges.

Gum paste can be moistened with just a bit or shortening kneaded into it.
