Cakes Go ahead and put an Erector set on a cake – or some dump truck
toys.
Another idea is to fill the back of a new and clean dump
truck (lined with parchment paper) with chunks of chocolate cake and crumbled
chocolate cookies. You can add candy rocks as well.

Games and Activities Construction Play
(ages 3-8) Dirt and construction toys and free time to play. If you
don’t have dirt most parents won’t mind their kids coming home with clean
clothes. Just have lots of toys and space for fun.
Lay Down the Road
(ages 3-10) Split your guests into two teams. Provide each team with the
same number of pieces of a road—black or gray construction paper. Instruct them
to lay out their road. You can race to see which team can lay out all the
pieces of their road fastest, or race to see who can get the longest road with
all pieces of the road connecting. You can provide each team with some tape, or
just have them lay down the road.
Hot Rivets (ages
3-10) Rivets can get pretty hot when they’re being used. Fill a
clean sock or other cloth bag (not see-through) with beans, or nuts and bolts
and pretend they’re hot rivets. Now use the bag of “rivets” to play Hot Potato.
Have your guests sit in a circle and pass the bag of rivets from one guest to
the next while music is playing. The guest who is holding the rivets when the
music stops is out of the game. Continue playing until only one guest is
remaining…and wins!
Break Down the Wall
(ages 3-16) Construction workers sometimes have to destroy a little so
they can build it new. Let your guests knock through
a wall made of empty boxes. Use small boxes covered with red paper with bricks
drawn on them. This is one of the most popular games at a superhero party. Keep
stacking and knocking down the wall until the guests tire of it.
Tower Building
(ages 3-16) Using the same boxes from the Break Down the Wall construction party game, you’re your young
guests see who can build the tallest tower. For older guests split the guests
into two teams, and give each team several plastic drinking straws and some
tape and have them race to see who can build the tallest tower fastest…or in
the time allowed and only give them 45 seconds.
Nuts vs. Bolts
(ages 4-8) Play
construction themed Tic Tac Toe. Only, instead of Xs
and Os use nuts and bolts. This could be a simple construction party
game to play while waiting for guests to show up for the party.
Scale the Scaffolding
Obstacle Course
(ages 4-16)
Make an obstacle course through the backyard. Go over a wheel barrow, under
lounge chairs, around a tree, through a shallow swimming pool and ride a
tricycle a short distance. You can also string a rope along the path of the
obstacle course and send the guests through it blindfolded. Add a sprinkler for
more fun.
Fill the Dump Truck
(ages 5-16) Split your construction party guests into two teams for this
relay game. Have each team fill a toy dump truck with dirt or beans or
something small—each truck should be the same size. Each member of the team
should take turns scooping dirt with a cup and running across the yard to fill
up the dump truck. On returning to the team, hand off the cup to the next
member and let them scoop and dump. Continue until one of the dump trucks is
full, or all the dirt is gone.
Crafts Popsicle Stick Puzzle
(ages 3-8) Just tape several craft sticks
together to form a wall. For younger guests use the extra wide craft sticks.
Then turn the wall over, tape side down and draw a picture on the craft sticks.
Or, you can glue a construction theme picture to the craft sticks, have the
guests color them, then carefully cut the picture between the sticks so it
makes a puzzle. A perfect construction party craft.
Wet Cement Drawing
(ages 3-16) Give each guest a pie tin filled with either wet cement or
plaster of Paris and let them make imprints with different items or write with
a nail in it. Write names on the pie tins. If it dries while the party is still
happening, go ahead and paint them as well.
Clay Statue(ages 3-16) Provide your guests with modeling clay and let them design a
statue for in front of a new building. Pretend you’ll be making a larger
version of the winning statue.
Model Sized (ages
5-16) Provide boxes and construction paper and markers, glue and
tape and let your guests build model sized buildings. If you really want to go
all out, lay out streets in the carpet with masking tape and make an entire
city! They’ll go crazy and have tons of fun with this construction party game.
