Decorations
Hang up several racing flags—you know, the black and white
checkered flags
Turn your sidewalk
into a road with white and yellow chalk
lines and dotted lines down the middle. Add a checkered beginning race
line and
an ending line.

Games
and Activities
Hot Wheels Race
(ages 3-8)
Race small cars down a ramp. You can easily lean a strip of
plywood on a chair to make the ramp. Just, make sure it’s smooth.
Cardboard
Box Race
(ages 3-10)
Turn cardboard boxes into racing cars. Take off the top and
bottom. Spray paint the sides. Glue on cardboard circles for tires. Add
a
couple strips of ribbon to hang over shoulders and have your guests
wear their
cars and race around the house or yard in them. Put out a strip of
crepe paper
streamers for a finish line.
Oil
Pan Spill
(ages 3-16)
Fill a couple shallow pans, like tin pie plates, with apple
juice. Have the guests split into teams and do a relay race carrying
the oil
(apple juice) back and forth across the yard. The team with the most
oil
(juice) at the end, wins!
Pit
Crew Challenge
(ages 3-16)
This is another relay race idea. Split the guests into two
or more teams and have them race to dress and undress in pit crew
clothes. For
each group include a mechanic’s jumper, a baseball cap, a tool belt and
maybe
even a fake moustache.
Tire
Race (ages
3-16)
Take the tires off various car and truck toys and race the
tires down a ramp.
Crafts
Pinewood Derby
Cars (ages
10-16)
You can pick up derby cars from a craft store or your Boy
Scouts of America store. The craft store will also have stickers and
other fun
things to add to your cars. You’ll need a scroll saw to cut the wood.
Have
plenty of adult help on hand for this activity with very observant
eyes. You
don’t want to make a trip to the emergency room for you car party.
Cardboard
Box Cars
(ages 3-10)
Prepare the cardboard boxes ahead of time by cutting out the
tops and bottoms of the boxes. Cut out four circles for tires for each
box car.
Spray paint the wheels black and the cars can be spray painted many
different
colors.
Soap
Cars (ages 6-16)
Make cars from bars of soap. Give each guest a bar of soap
and a plastic butter knife to carve the soap into a car. Add wheels
purchased from a craft store or model store. Just be very careful to
put the wheels in so they sit evenly and level with the ground. Then
run some clean races at your car party.
Racing
Pennant
(ages 3-16)
Provide blank pennants for each guest to decorate with
markers for their favorite racing team, or for their own car at your
car party.
Racing
Flags (ages
3-16)
Provide your guests with white pillow cases and permanent
markers to decorate as flags for their favorite racing team.
