Butterfly Cake

Make a Butterfly cake with the Provo Craft Cricut machine when spring is in the air.

cricut butterfly cake

The shapes for this cake are cut using the Provo Craft Cricut Cake machine and the Home Accents Solutions cartridge.

Items Needed:

2 layer 10" square cake
1 can frosting
1 batch fondant
Gel food coloring
1/2 lb. gum paste
Home Accents Solutions cartridge

Directions:

First, mix the fondant yellow.

Cover the cake with frosting and then yellow fondant. Trim the edges of the fondant around the base of the cake.

Mix a little more than 1/4 of the gum paste pink and 1/4 yellow. Split the rest between green, blue and purple.

Mix most of the pink and yellow as a marble and roll out on mat.

Cut a 7" butterfly from the marble, and add several other butterflies to the mat that are about 2" in size.

Marble the other colors with left over pink and yellow and roll out on a mat.

Cut several butterflies with the shadow feature, size 1 1/2" - 4".

Brush the back of the butterflies with a little water to help them stick to the fondant on the butterfly cake.

Lay out the large butterfly first.

Then add a few smaller butterflies to the top and the sides.

You can use the Provo Craft Cricut Sweet Treats cartridge to print "Happy Birthday" and add that to the top if you like.

Tips:

  • Use gel food coloring. Really. It's much better.
  • Use a pizza cutter to cut and trim the fondant and gum paste.
  • I actually used fondant instead of gum paste for the butterflies on this cake, but the fondant couldn't do the details of the little trailing tails (or whatever those are) so I cut them off from the butterflies.
  • If making fondant butterflies use a bit of frosting or shortening to glue the butterflies to the fondant.
